B.C. anti-gang unit seizes 3.5 kilograms of drugs, makes 2 arrests in Surrey traffic stop

A proactive traffic stop in Surrey last month led a major drug bust, with officers seizing 3.5 kilograms of illicit drugs and arresting two people, according to the province’s anti-gang unit.

The Uniform Gang Enforcement Team, which is part of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C., said the drugs included multiple forms of fentanyl, along with cocaine and methamphetamine.

“This seizure represents a significant financial blow to organized crime,” Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha of the CFSEU-BC said in a news release Thursday. “By intercepting bulk quantities of drugs at the distribution level, UGET officers are directly disrupting supply chains and cutting into the profits that fuel gang activity in our communities.”

Authorities said the drugs seized in the March 24 traffic stop were packaged in bulk and vacuum-sealed bags and included the following:

• Total fentanyl: 1.29 kilograms
• Purple fentanyl: 517 grams
• Yellow fentanyl: 260 grams
• Red fentanyl: 516 grams
• Methamphetamine: 1.14 kilograms
• Cocaine: 1.06 kilograms

Two suspects were arrested at the scene. Officers said one of them was in violation of his study permit conditions and was taken to a Canada Border Services Agency immigration holding centre, where he remains in custody.

The second suspect was issued violation tickets for speeding and was given a seven-month driving ban, according to police.

“This investigation remains ongoing and charges are expected to be recommended,” Sangha said. “CFSEU-BC remains committed to targeting organized crime and disrupting the distribution of dangerous drugs that pose a significant risk to public safety.”
