Assault in Richmond, B.C., not actually a stranger attack, RCMP say

An assault against a woman in a Richmond, B.C., parking lot this week was not actually a stranger attack, as previously reported by authorities.

In a statement Friday, Richmond RCMP said investigators have since confirmed the suspect and victim are “known to each other.”

“It is not a stranger assault as previously reported,” the detachment said. “Investigators determined this once they were able to interview the victim.”

Authorities said the victim was attacked with an “edged weapon” in a mall parkade around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, suffering injuries that have not been publicly disclosed.

RCMP officers were called to the scene and arrested a suspect without incident.

The victim remained hospitalized in stable condition Friday, while the suspect remained in custody, authorities said.

Richmond RCMP said there is “no ongoing risk” to the public as the assault was “an isolated incident.”
