2 weeks of record heat: B.C. hits multiple high temperature marks for 14th straight day

For the 14th consecutive day, multiple communities in British Columbia set or tied daily high temperature records Thursday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Five places in B.C. saw their hottest Sept. 4 on record Thursday, continuing a streak of daily records that began two weeks ago on Aug. 22.

As it has for much of the streak, Lytton recorded the hottest record-breaking high, with the mercury hitting 38.8 C. The previous record for Sept. 4 was 37.1 C, set 37 years ago in 1988.

Nearby Lillooet tied its 91-year-old record high of 36.7 C, which the district first hit back in 1934.

Smithers also tied its Sept. 4 record Thursday, but that mark was a much cooler and more recent 28.1 C set in 2006.

The other two records broken were in Summerland – where the new high of 31.5 C narrowly eclipsed the old record of 31.2 C set in 1995 – and in the Tatlayoko Lake area, where the new record is 32.1 C, just a tenth of a degree hotter than the previous record of 32 C from 1988.

ECCC’s temperature records are “derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record,” according to the weather agency.

Earlier this week, ECCC meteorologist Matt Loney told CTV News the variety of historical stations in operation across the province makes it difficult to say definitively what the longest streak of consecutive days of record-breaking heat in B.C. history would be.

He said he could not recall a previous instance of 11 straight days of at least one high temperature record being broken in the province.

“It’s unusual, certainly,” Loney said at the time.

He predicted that the streak might stretch as long as 15 days before the strong ridge of high pressure that has lingered over the province for the last two weeks finally breaks up and the weather pattern changes.

Heat warnings that were in effect for parts of the province for much of the week have ended, and the forecast for the coming week shows cooler temperatures and possible showers in Metro Vancouver.
