1 dead after Trans-Canada Highway crash near Victoria

One person is dead after a collision Thursday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway near Victoria.

Police say a driver is believed to have suffered a medical event, causing the crash between the highway exits for Helmcken Road and McKenzie Avenue.

“At this time, there is no indication that any other factors contributed to the crash,” Saanich police spokesperson Insp. Damian Kowalewich said in a statement Friday, confirming one adult died in the collision.

“Our condolences go out to their family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” he added.

Police continue to investigate the collision, which closed the northbound lanes of the highway for several hours as police, paramedics and firefighters responded to the scene.

“Given the seriousness of the incident, our detective division was engaged to lead the investigation in partnership with our traffic safety collision analysts team,” Kowalewich said.

“Their work will continue as they seek to understand the details surrounding the event.”

The Trans-Canada Highway reopened to traffic at around 5 p.m.
