Police warn of ongoing jewelry distraction thefts in York Region

Police are warning residents in York Region of ongoing jewelry distraction thefts that allegedly involved the same suspects in Markham.

During these thefts, York Regional Police said the suspects would allegedly drive through neighbourhoods scouring for vulnerable individuals wearing visible jewelry and were alone. Police add they mostly targeted seniors.

After they found a victim, police say one suspect would approach them either by walking up to them or luring them to their vehicle under the guise of asking for directions.

“During a brief interaction, the suspect will remove the victim’s jewelry and replace it with fake gold items such as a bracelet, ring or necklace before fleeing the area,” Friday’s news release reads.

Police say two incidents happened on Thursday, allegedly involving a woman who approached victims in grocery store parking lots.

She allegedly tried to striking up a conversation and offered the victims fake gold jewelry. Police say she hopped into an awaiting grey Honda sedan after she stole the victim’s jewelry, and the group of suspects drove away from the scene.

Police say nobody sustained any physical injuries.

York police remind the public to be cautious of strangers, especially those who are asking for directions while invading their personal space.

Police urge locals to keep valuables secured in a safe space and immediately report any suspicious activity to them.

“Criminals take advantage of opportunities. Don’t give them the chance to make you a victim,” officials wrote.
