A Crown witness broke into tears on the stand Friday as she cautiously testified about her friend’s involvement in Saskatoon’s Terror Squad street gang.

Nykera Brown, 20, was found shot dead on Nov. 15, 2022, inside her home on Avenue P South. Her boyfriend, 28-year-old Andrew Rosenfeldt, is charged with second-degree murder.

Brown’s friend — whose identity is protected by a publication ban — appeared hesitant to talk about the Terror Squad, saying she didn’t feel safe discussing details.

Court heard that Brown held a senior role in the gang and had a “2019” tattoo, known as a patch, to mark her Terror Squad status.

“When you have a patch, that means you can call shots,” her friend testified Friday.

On the night of her death, court heard Brown planned to go on a mission to confront a fellow gang member who was believed to have disrespected the gang — a mission typically carried out by a senior member and “soldiers.”

When defence lawyer Chris Murphy pressed the witness about the mission, she grew emotional.

“I do not feel safe answering that,” she said.

The witness often made eye contact with the Crown prosecutor and judge to confirm whether she had to answer Murphy’s questions.

“It’s not fair to her family or anybody. It’s not fair to me because my friend is gone, and I’m sitting here replaying a traumatizing thing that happened,” she said, wiping her eyes with a tissue.

“Everyone here has sympathy for you,” Murphy said.

“I don’t want sympathy, I want justice!” the witness interrupted.

“I know you do. You’re mad at me, I get it. You lost your best friend and you don’t want to say anything that might tarnish her memory, right?” Murphy asked.

“Yes,” the witness said, sobbing.

Murphy asked the witness if she understood that Rosenfeldt is innocent until proven guilty.

“Not in my eyes, but yes, I do ... in my eyes he’s guilty,” she said.

The trial is expected to continue next week.
