Conservatives maintain Sask. stronghold

Conservatives kept their stronghold in Saskatchewan on election day Monday -- despite a Liberal majority win -- after securing 10 of 14 seats in the province.

The Conservative Party is keeping its stronghold on Saskatchewan despite the Liberal’s majority win in Canada’s federal election.

Conservatives won 10 of the province’s 14 ridings Monday —just three less than they won in 2011.

Incumbent party members David Anderson, Kelly Block, Randy Hoback, Tom Lukiwski, Gerry Ritz, Andrew Scheer and Brad Trost each won their respective ridings, while new Conservative candidates Robert Kitchen, Cathay Wagantall and Kevin Waugh also pulled out wins.

The NDP, who didn’t win a Saskatchewan seat in the 2011 election, made the most ground in the province.

The party secured three seats, with Sheri Benson winning Saskatoon West, Erin Weir grabbing Regina-Lewvan and Georgina Jolibois taking Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River.

Weir’s win was extremely close and Jolibois’ was even closer.

Weir secured only 143 more votes than Conservative candidate Trent Fraser to win by just 0.3 per cent, while Jolibois won by just 0.2 per cent in a tight race against both the Conservatives and Liberals.

Jolibois won just 70 more votes than Liberal candidate Lawrence Joseph and 1,190 more than incumbent Conservative candidate Rob Clarke.

Longtime Liberal MP Ralph Goodale defended his Regina-Wascana seat. He’s represented the riding since 1993.

He was the lone Liberal winner in the province, but his party secured 184 of the 338 seats across the country to win a majority government.
