‘That’s my intent’: Scott Moe committed to continuing as party leader into 2028 election

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he is fully committed to leading his party into the next provincial election in 2028 and looks forward to bringing that conversation to the Sask. Party convention this weekend.

“That’s my intent, and that’s my intent to certainly work as hard as ever, not only with the MLAs that we have here and candidates in the lead up to the next election, but to work hard with so many volunteers across the province,” Moe told reporters on Thursday.

Moe said many of those volunteers will be at convention, which will take place in Saskatoon.

“I think we’re going to have 1,000 people there. It’s going to be a great convention, and really, I think, an opportunity for us to launch our conversation about the work that we’re going to do … and earning back the majority of Saskatchewan people’s trust so that we can form a six-term government,” he said.

“That’s how we’re looking at the convention is really, this will be an opportunity for us to launch the conversation about a successful run in the next provincial election,” he added.

Moe is Saskatchewan’s 15th premier. His first foray into politics was through volunteer work.

Moe was first elected to the legislature as a Saskatchewan Party MLA for the constituency of Rosthern-Shellbrook in 2011. He has won re-election four times since then. During his time in government, Moe served as environment minister, and minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Water Corporation and the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency.

When then-Premier Brad Wall announced he was stepping away from politics in 2017, Moe was among those in contention to replace him. Beating out four other candidates, Moe was elected the leader of the Saskatchewan Party on Jan. 17, 2018. He was sworn in as premier on Feb. 2.

As premier, Moe has led the Saskatchewan Party through two successful elections in 2020 and 2024. However, the province’s most recent election saw the party lose a substantial presence in both Regina and Saskatoon, falling from 42 seats at dissolution to 34 at the end of election night.

During his tenure as premier, Moe has worked to strengthen Saskatchewan’s economy, an issue he said has always been close to his heart. He has also been vocal about several issues, most notably opposing the federal government’s carbon tax plan, as well as the implementation of the Parents’ Bill of Rights.

An amendment regarding restriction of voting members will be discussed at the party’s upcoming convention as well.

The Sask. Party convention will take place at TCU Place in Saskatoon on Nov. 8 and 9.
