REGINA - This year’s summer blockbuster is drawing in thousands of moviegoers to a Regina theatre offering a very rare fan experience. Regina’s Kramer IMAX Theatre is one of 41 worldwide, that is screening Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in IMAX 70-millimetre film. “This really is the format that Mr. Nolan intended his movie to be seen,” said Saskatchewan Science Centre Chief Operating Officer Ryan Holota. Moviegoers from across Canada and the United States – as far away as Texas, Ohio and Indianapolis – have travelled to the science centre in Regina to see the film at the Kramer IMAX Theatre. The Odyssey was filmed in a way that has never been done before, using brand new IMAX technology. “It is the very first feature length film that was shot start to finish, every scene, with an IMAX film camera,” Holota said. Only nine theatres in Canada are screening the Odyssey in IMAX 70mm. Essentially, every show at the Kramer IMAX Theatre has sold out since opening weekend, according to Holota. “One of the things that we have been able to do really well is build a reputation as a place to see these movies on IMAX 70 mm film,” Holota said. The theatre extended screenings into late August and has plans to add a fourth screening on days during that weekend that currently show the movie only three times. “Demand is just really, really high for this,” Holota said. “We want to meet that demand and give people the opportunity to see this movie.” Bob Parker who read The Odyssey in university, drove an hour from Moose Jaw, Sask., to see the modern adaptation play out on the IMAX screen. “It is a great story,” he told CTV News. “We just thought to see it all on the big screen would be really worth coming.” “Everything comes alive,” he said. Tickets for the first screenings went on sale a year ago. Max Leduchowski was hoping to be one of the first people to see the movie, but he had to wait nearly a week. “I tried getting a screening earlier, but they were all selling out,” he told CTV News while waiting in line for refreshments at the theatre. He could have gone to a regular theatre to see the movie, but said he was adamant about waiting for an IMAX screening. “It was the experience and the visuals that I was really chasing after,” he said. “I just thought this would be the best way to watch the movie.” The Kramer IMAX screen is five stories tall and 70 feet wide.
