Sentencing arguments heard for Jason McKay after pleading guilty in ‘horrific’ 2017 murder of wife

The man who confessed to the 2017 murder of his wife heard arguments regarding when he should be eligible for parole, again Wednesday.

Jason McKay pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of his wife, Jenny (Campbell) McKay on Jan. 23, 2026 – nearly eight and a half years after she died.

Jenny was brutally murdered in September 2017 in her home on the 200 block of Angus Street.

According to an agreed statement of facts, sometime between the very late hours of Sept. 5, 2017 and early morning of Sept. 6, 2017, Jason attacked her with a knife. Ultimately using multiple knives, some of which post-mortem, the offender stabbed her 24 times.

“The knife wounds were primarily directed to the neck and chest,” the statement of facts read. “The attack was vicious and brutal.”

Following a trial in 2020, Jason was found guilty by a judge of second-degree murder, sentenced to life in prison and ineligible for parole for 17 years.

He then appealed his conviction and sentence.

In 2024, Saskatchewan’s Court of Appeal found the trial judge, “failed to consider expert evidence about the effect of drugs and alcohol on a person’s memory and their capacity to understand the consequences of their actions,” and granted a new trial.

Jason’s retrial was scheduled for early 2026. However, just days before it was set to begin, he pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Bringing back memories

For the second time in six years, members of Jenny’s family, her friends and a judge heard arguments of what a fit time behind bars is before Jason may be eligible for parole.

Much of Jenny’s family lives in Nova Scotia and were not present in court Wednesday.

Victim impact statements read aloud detailed how going through the process a second time has brought back a terrible sense of grief.

“There was an ongoing anger of how this could be happening,” said father Doug Campbell. “Dragging on for over eight years while it felt like the rights and personhood of our deceased daughter felt ignored.”

“As we listened to the hearing on January 22, 2026, we were shocked when Jason plead guilty, and all of a sudden there is no trial. We are glad there will be no new trial, but it is very troubling to have had our grief and emotions yanked around like this,” he added.

Jenny was 33 at the time of her death, the oldest of three children to Doug and mother Glenda.

“She has a new niece and two new nephews who only know Auntie Jenny through stories and our memories,” her mother’s victim impact statement read. “Not as she should have been and could have been known.”

“Her life was full of promise, cut short by the hands of the very first and should have been a protector,” Glenda added.

Some of the statements were penned back in 2020, while others had written new ones for the pending retrial.

“For those left behind, there is an unbearable grief,” said Jenny’s aunt Kim Campbell. “A life-defining loss of sorrow deep to the core that pierces shattered fronts. There is a gratitude for the fleeting time she was ours.”

Jason’s daughter, Alyssa McKay read her victim impact statement in person to the courtroom.

“It has been almost a decade since Jenny died. That day is something I think of often,” she began. “I was only 17, starting my first day of Grade 12. Only I was able to experience the situation from my point of view. This caused me to feel like an outsider, because while everyone grieves the death of Jenny, [but] I also grieve of the memories I have with my dad.”

“I believed heavily on the butterfly effect and how one action can change the trajectory of the future, and that Jenny’s death was caused because of me,” Alyssa added. “I know now I couldn’t have changed the outcome even if I wanted to.”

Crown arguments

Despite the guilty plea, Jason will receive a life sentence. With it comes a minimum of 10 years of parole ineligibility and up to 25 years.

In a rehashing of arguments six years later, the Crown is now pushing for 18 years of parole ineligibility, the same it did in 2020.

“These are certainly exceptional circumstances and on the most egregious end of conduct,” said Senior Crown Prosecutor Adam Breker. “The first trial set Mr. McKay’s parole and eligibility in that case at 17 years, but issues of the parole eligibility were not the subject matter of the appeal.”

Breker argued Jason had a history of violence, particularly when intoxicated.

According to the agreed statement of facts, the offender was intoxicated at the time of Jenny’s murder and was taking prescribed medication at the same time.

The Crown believes Jason knew the combination of the two lead to conflict between he and his wife.

“We do not see him connecting this murder to his own problems, Jenny [was] the one with the problems,” Breker argued. “Perhaps he’s just trying to paint a rosy picture of himself as compared to Jenny to characterize the strain and the tension was all of Jenny’s making. Jenny’s drinking caused problems in their relationship.”

“[Jason] seems to miss the part about how he murdered Jenny because he knowingly and willingly fueled himself with alcohol despite knowing that it wasn’t a good combination for him while on these prescription medications,” the prosecution added.

Breker also says the severity of the attack warrants a stiff penalty.

“The circumstances of Jenny’s murder are indeed horrific,” he said. “We submit a call for a sentence in the upper end of the range, in terms of the nature of brutality involved and the character of the violence.”

Defense submission

In response to the Crown’s arguments, Jason’s defense is calling for just 12 years prior to parole eligibility.

“We’re dealing with a guilty plea over eight years after the fact,” lawyer Mike Nolin said. “We accept it is to some extent mitigating and certainly, is a fact in our submission, it is an extremely minimal mitigating circumstance in all the circumstances and the procedural history of this case.”

“Jenny Campbell shouldn’t be dead. This is a heinous, violent crime that happens all too often in our society, particularly in Saskatchewan,” he added.

Nolin took issue with Breker’s claim about Jason’s prescription medication being a factor in the murder.

“I don’t think it should be dismissed as, ‘He knew he shouldn’t be drinking when he was on his med,” the defense disputed. “The law must leave a door open for rehabilitation.”

The defense also looked to Jenny’s knowing of her husband’s battle leading up to the events in September of 2017.

“[She] acknowledged the extent of his mental illness and said he was ill in a text to her colleague,” Nolin said. “He was skipping pills, and that combined with the drinking, was resulting in him coming out of control. He was ill and needed help.”

“She also noted that he was a good father, too. Needed to reconnect with his daughters,” the lawyer added.

The defense also pointed to a series of case law which outlined lesser parole ineligibility for what they believed were more serious crimes for offenders with similar records to Jason.

In closing, the offender was offered an opportunity to speak as well.

“I’m sorry for this horrific tragedy,” Jason said. “I hope everybody can move on from this. I think of Jenny every day.”

Judge reserves decision

After hearing nearly three hours of submissions, Justice Beverly Klatt reserved her decision on sentence Wednesday.

Regardless of her decision, it is not guaranteed Jason will be allowed parole when the time comes.

His counsel will have to submit a request for a hearing before a judge has final say. If approved, Jason will have to adhere to conditions imposed by the court for life.

Justice Klatt is scheduled to hand down her decision Feb. 24, 2026 at Court of King’s Bench.
