File Hills fire crews continue to battle wildfire on Star Blanket Cree Nation

Fire crews are battling a fast-moving wildfire near Star Blanket Cree Nation after several minor structures were destroyed over the weekend.

File Hills Nations Fire Teams and the Balcarres & Rural Fire Department are continuing to battle a wildfire that’s escaped containment on the Star Blanket Cree Nation.

In an update posted to social media late Monday afternoon, the File Hills First Nations Police Service reported that the previously contained wildfire had reignited and jumped a road.

The blaze is continuing to move north, west and east towards Little Black Bear First Nation.

Officials have not indicated the cause of the fire but did say some structures in the community were threatened by the blaze.

“The fire has consumed multiple minor structures and threatened several homes,” the post added.

File Hills police are reminding residents of key fire safety measures.

“Stay vigilant and be aware of any fires near your home,” read a social media post. “Avoid areas where firefighters are working to allow them plenty of room to operate safely, due to the smoke the roadways have near zero visibility.”

Police advised those with homes in a fire path to be prepared to evacuate a moment’s notice.

“Please share this with your neighbours and follow instructions from your local band council, firefighters, and emergency services,” File Hills Police’s advice noted.

During a separate briefing Monday afternoon, a representative for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency said the organization was still gathering information regarding the fire on Star Blanket Cree Nation and could not offer a comment at that time.
