Why snow shovelling can be risky and how to do it safely

Many residents are digging out after this week’s snowstorm, but shovelling can put real strain on the heart. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

Ottawa is still digging out from a heavy snowfall, with many residents outside clearing driveways and sidewalks. However, health experts warn that the combination of cold temperatures and heavy snow can put real strain on the heart.

For Jennifer Dare, the morning after a big snowfall means grabbing a shovel but also knowing when to slow down.

“We’re not doing it all at once,” Dare said while clearing her driveway. “Take your time and take breaks, it is a lot of work and there are dangers if you overdo it.”

Doctors say snow shovelling is more physically demanding than many people realize and can increase the risk of heart problems, even for those who consider themselves healthy.

“Men of my age, you kind of think you’re young and can power through it,” says Ottawa resident Jonathan Malloy. “And you can’t.”

Another resident, Bob Paulson, says the physical toll is immediate.

“My heart’s just pounding as we speak,” Paulson says, who took a break from shovelling his driveway to speak with CTV News. “I took the dog for a walk beforehand, and heart was going good with that, but nothing compared to this.”

The risks became very real for Ottawa Coun. Jeff Leiper, who suffered a heart attack while shovelling snow in February 2019.

“Fairly mild, but nonetheless a heart attack,” Leiper says.

Now he hopes his experience encourages others to slow down.

“If I have to shovel, I’m using a smaller shovel, lifting smaller loads, and pushing the snow instead of lifting,” he says.

According to the Ottawa Heart Institute, snow shovelling is considered vigorous exercise similar to climbing stairs while carrying weight. Cold air causes blood vessels to narrow, while heavy lifting can rapidly increase heart rate and blood pressure.

The Heart Institute says several factors can raise the risk of a cardiac event, including the weight and type of snow, the size of the shovel, the speed of shovelling, and underlying heart conditions. Age alone doesn’t determine risk.

The Heart Institute recommends:

• Pushing snow instead of lifting whenever possible.
• Using a smaller shovel and taking lighter loads.
• Taking frequent breaks and pacing yourself.
• Warming up before starting.
• Avoiding holding your breath while lifting.
• Stopping immediately if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea.
