What’s playing this weekend: July 10-13

It's Friday, and that means new movies in theatres and streaming at home, including the live action movie of a fan favorite.

CTV Your Morning Ottawa has the rundown of some of the hottest new movies playing this weekend.

Matt Demers, a.k.a. Mr. Hollywood, joined the show on Friday to discuss new movies that will delight kids, engage grownups and scare everyone.

Moana (PG)

Disney’s live-action retelling of the classic animated movie is one that will bring smiles to kids of all ages.

“That’s the trend now, where Disney and other studios will take these beloved animated movies and do the live-action treatment. There’s still lots of CGI in there as well,” said Demers.

“You’ve got a wonderful actress, Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson reprising his role as Maui. He’s fun.”

The movie stars Laga’aia, Johnson, and John Tui, and was directed by Thomas Kail.

“Is this movie redundant? It’s the same movie, we know the story, but they do make it vibrant and they do make it entertaining and the music hits,” Demers said.

Evil Dead Burn (Rated R)

“Something very different and not for kids,” said Demers.

Evil Dead Burn is the latest film in the Evil Dead franchise, started by the breakout 1981 cult classic Sam Raimi film.

“Creepy is a good word. I’m also going to throw in gruesome, with a capital G. Just insanity here from start to finish,” said Demers.

“I love these types of movies, but they’re not for everybody. You’re going to be drenched in nightmare fuel. This is creepy stuff from the Evil Dead franchise, but even if you don’t know anything about the previous movies, you can still go in and get scared.”

The movie stars: Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan. It was directed by Sébastien Vanicek.

The Invite (Rated R)

“This is great. Drama, mixed with comedy,” said Demers.

“A very sophisticated film about this couple that decided to invite their neighbours to come over. There’s a certain proposition that’s made... It almost turns into this kind of spicy couples’ therapy. Very grown up, but a great, well-executed and crafted film by director Olivia Wilde.

“The A-Grade quartet here, because it’s the four of them throughout this whole movie,” Demers said.
