Ottawa teacher accused of sexually assaulting student

Ottawa police have charged a 30-year-old teacher with several offences after allegations surfaced that she was involved in a sexual relationship with one of her students.

Jessica Beraldin is charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and making sexually explicit material available to a child.

She was released on bail with a number of conditions Friday

Police say their investigation found that the alleged relationship began while Beraldin was working as a teacher, while employed by the Ottawa Catholic School Board. She was teaching at Mother Teresa High School in Barrhaven.

In a statement, OCSB Director of Education Denise Andre said, "I truly regret that such conduct has allegedly occurred at one of our schools. The number one priority for our Board is the continued safety and well-being of each student. We will continue to cooperate with the police in their investigation of this matter. As a Catholic community we will pray for all the persons affected by this difficult situation.”

The board says it is providing students, staff and families with counselling.

Beraldin has been suspended from her teaching duties.

Police believe there could be more victims.
