Seventeen people have been arrested following a series of police operations targeting shoplifting at a downtown Ottawa business this summer. The Ottawa Police Service says officers with the Central District Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) conducted a series of operations at a Rideau Street business between July 12 and Aug. 18 in response to concerns about retail theft. “Working with the business’s loss prevention personnel, NRT officers conducted targeted operations at various times throughout the project, increasing visibility and providing operational support to deter theft-related activity and enhance public safety in the area,” police said. Police say 17 people were arrested and 17 criminal charges were laid during the blitz. Seven Provincial Offence Notices were also issued by officers. The Ottawa Police Service did not name the business, but told CTV News Ottawa is was located in the 300 block of Rideau Street. Police are encouraging businesses to report theft-related incidents and suspicious activity. “This initiative reflects the Ottawa Police Service’s commitment to proactive problem-solving, crime prevention, and community safety through strong partnerships with local businesses and stakeholders,” police said. “Officers will continue to engage with retailers and community partners to address issues affecting residents, visitors, and businesses in the downtown core.”
