The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is implementing a new fee structure for false alarms involving fire and security systems. Starting Sept. 1, commercial properties and multi-unit residential buildings will see a $300 flat fee for false alarms. For residential properties with less than three units, the fee will be $50. “False alarms occur regularly and can divert police officers and firefighters from actual emergencies, creating operational and financial impacts,” reads a news release from the municipality on Thursday. The HRM also says it recorded roughly 5,200 false alarm incidents in 2025. Under the previous fee structure, the first false alarm within a 12-month period was free. Fees increased to $200 the second occurrence, $300 for the third and $500 for each additional false alarm. In the event of a false alarm, an invoice will be given to the owner of the property as notification that the incident occurred, payable to the municipality. The fees do not apply to standalone smoke or carbon monoxide alarms. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
