Second suspect arrested in Sudbury stabbings

Greater Sudbury Police are investigating two stabbings in the city’s downtown core that left two men in hospital – a 41-year-old in critical condition and a 23-year-old in stable condition.

Both attacks occurred on Monday evening, one near the intersection of Elm and Durham Streets and one at Energy Court.

Police believe the victims were involved in separate altercations with the same group before being stabbed.

“These were targeted incidents as the individuals involved are known to each other,” said Acting Detective Staff Sgt. Ken Lingenfelter of the Greater Sudbury Police Service’s Major Crime Section in the initial news release from police.

Arrests made

A 17-year-old man was arrested shortly after midnight on Aug. 12 and charged with two counts each of attempted murder, disguise with intent, possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with a release order. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, his identity cannot be released.

On Aug. 13, a second suspect, a 26-year-old man, was arrested near Durham and Larch Streets. He also faces two counts each of attempted murder, disguise with intent and possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose. Police did not release his name upon arrest.

A third suspect, a 16-year-old man, was arrested on Louis Street the following evening and faces the same charges as the second suspect and his name cannot be released due to his age.

Ongoing investigation

Police say one suspect remains at large. Authorities urge anyone with information related to the incident to contact police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
