Police in St. Thomas say a 40-year-old resident is facing multiple charges after officers responded to reports of a dog being assaulted on the city’s south side. St. Thomas police said they received several calls from witnesses who reported a person attacking a dog. Witnesses were able to provide officers with information that helped identify the suspect. Officers went to the area and found the person, who was arrested at the scene. Animal Welfare Services also responded and took custody of the dog, taking it to a veterinarian for assessment. During the investigation, police said they obtained information about a similar incident involving the same person. The accused has been charged with two counts of cruelty to animals — causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury — as well as one count of obstructing a peace officer. Police did not release the name of the accused.
