Winnipeg bringing back Neighbourhood Action Teams

Crews that helped deal with litter, potholes and other neighbourhood issues are back at work in Winnipeg this summer.

A city initiative ensuring neighbourhoods receive prompt repairs and cleaning has returned for another summer.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham announced Wednesday the Neighbourhood Action Teams, first introduced last year, have returned. The teams address the most common requests to 311, such as filling potholes, removing fallen branches, and fixing broken signs and curbs.

“Instead of sending separate crews at separate times for separate issues, these teams, cross-trained, can handle multiple issues together during one coordinated visit,” Gillingham said. “It’s a smarter, more efficient, more effective approach, and it delivers better service and better results for residents.”

This year, five teams made up of seven workers will rotate through all 15 wards in Winnipeg between May and October. City councillors work with local stakeholders on priorities for the neighbourhood, and crews spend roughly four weeks in each ward.

“It’s really about making neighbourhoods feel cared for and delivering public services in a way that makes sense to residents,” Gillingham said.

The mayor added residents are also being encouraged to connect directly with team members when they’re in the neighbourhood if they have any issues or repairs that need to happen.

Teams are currently working in Old Kildonan, North Kildonan, Point Douglas, Mynarski and the Elmwood – East Kildonan wards. The full schedule can be found online.
