Suspect in custody after Sudbury convenience store robbery

Sudbury police have a suspect in custody after a convenience store robbery sent one person to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday morning.

Greater Sudbury police have taken a suspect into custody after a robbery at a convenience store on Tuesday morning prompted a heavy police presence and the containment of a residence in the city’s Elm Street area.

“The individual believed to be responsible for the robbery has been taken into custody,” police said in an updated social media post Tuesday afternoon.

Officers first responded to the Kwik-Way on Elm Street near Beatty Street around 11 a.m. after reports of a robbery.

“One person has been transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Greater Sudbury Police Service spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn in an email to CTV News earlier in the day.

The suspect had fled the scene on foot, prompting a canine track, police said. The investigation led officers to a nearby residence, which they contained.

During the standoff, the public was asked to avoid the areas of Elm Street, Ethelbert Street, Maclachlan Street and Spruce Street.

In their latest update, police confirmed that additional individuals inside the residence have since exited.

The detours and road closures on Elm Street will be removed shortly, said police just before 4 p.m.

“Some officers will remain on scene until a search warrant has been executed,” police added.

The Kwik-Way store was closed immediately following the incident, with a sign on the door stating it was shut due to a “medical emergency.”
