Northern Ont. impaired driving suspect nabbed after running stop sign

A 37-year-old from Elliot Lake has been charged with impaired driving after police saw a blue SUV drive through a stop sign.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. April 29 in Thessalon, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

“Police observed a blue SUV fail to come to a complete stop at the intersection of Water Street and Government Road,” the OPP said.

“A traffic stop was initiated on Huron Street. During the interaction, officers observed signs consistent with alcohol impairment. As a result, the driver was arrested and transported to the Thessalon OPP detachment for further testing.”

Charges include impaired driving and failing to stop at a stop sign.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 4.

The driver was also issued an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“The OPP reminds motorists that impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death on Ontario roads,” police said.

“If you plan to consume alcohol or drugs, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi, or use a rideshare service.”
