Moosonee motorist charged with impaired driving, open alcohol

A 35-year-old man from Moosonee faces multiple charges, including impaired driving, after Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver late last month.

The incident occurred on the morning of Jan. 28, when OPP officers responded to a report concerning a driver travelling from Moose Factory to Moosonee at about 11:45 a.m.

Police located the vehicle in Moosonee a short time later.

“Officers initiated a traffic stop and determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol,” said OPP in a news release.

The driver was then taken into custody and transported to the Moosonee OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, police charged the motorist with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor along with impaired driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

In addition to the charges, the man also received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension. Further, under provincial law, the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days at the owner’s expense.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled in court on March 3.

Police issue public reminder

OPP used the incident to reiterate the dangers of impaired driving.

“Impaired driving continues to pose a serious risk on Ontario roadways,” said OPP.

“Impaired driving continues to put everyone at risk, if you suspect an impaired driver, call 911,” added OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer in a related social media post.
