Many highways still closed as northern Ont. digs out from storm

Rick Wyman has all the weather details you need to know for northeastern Ontario amid a major winter storm, as well as what to expect for the next seven days.

While heavy snow has given way to extreme cold across much of northeastern Ontario on Tuesday, many highways in the region are still closed.

“Multiple road closures remain in effect this morning as the winter storm system persists in parts of our region, resulting in hazardous road conditions,” Ontario Provincial Police said.

Part of Highway 11 is still closed, from North Bay to Hearst.

In addition, Highway 572 is closed from Ramore to Highway 101, as well as Highway 577 from Highway 101 to Highway 11.

Highway 65 is closed from Matachewan to the Quebec border, as well as Highway 101 from Chapleau to the Quebec border.

Highway 144 is also closed from Timmins to Gogama, while Highway 560 is closed from Gogama and Englehart and Highway 655 from Driftwood to Timmins.

While weather warnings have ended in most areas, a yellow blowing snow advisory is in effect in the Timmins area through Tuesday afternoon.

“Northwesterly winds gusting 50 to 70 km/h will result in blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility, particularly in open areas,” Environment Canada said.

“Winds are expected to gradually ease tonight. Travel will likely be hazardous due to near-zero visibility. Road closures are possible.”
