Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet has confirmed his plan to step away from politics at the end of his term. He made the announcement Wednesday morning in his Trois-Rivières, Que. riding. Visibly moved, Boulet said he gave his decision careful thought, adding that he wants to turn the page on this chapter. He thanked former premier François Legault for his support over the years and reiterated his confidence in Premier Christine Fréchette. “She has all the personal and professional skills needed to continue serving as premier and meeting the needs and aspirations of Quebecers,” he said, noting that he had spoken with her earlier that morning. He insisted that the difficulties faced by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) had nothing to do with his decision. “I remain confident and optimistic about the future. That was not a determining factor in my decision-making process,” he said. Boulet, a labour lawyer, has represented the Trois-Rivières, Que. riding since 2018. He served as Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity from 2018 to 2022, and also took on the responsibilities of Immigration, Francization and Integration from 2021 until the 2022 elections. After being re-elected in 2022, he returned to his role as Minister of Labour but lost his other responsibilities. As Minister of Labour, Boulet spearheaded several bills, including a reform of the Parental Insurance Act, the Child Labour Act, and the controversial Act to improve transparency, governance and the democratic process of workplace associations, which drew the ire of labour unions. Following Christine Fréchette’s victory as leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) earlier this year, Boulet also became Minister responsible for Canadian Relations. A few months ago, Quebec signed a 10-year, $10 billion agreement with Ottawa, the funding of which is set to be used, in particular, for public transit.
