Flood warning remains in effect for Lake Nipissing shoreline

CTV News weather specialist Rick Wyman has the details of the weather forecast for the next seven days across northeastern Ontario.

A flood warning remains in effect for the Lake Nipissing shoreline, La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive and Parks Creek, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority said Friday.

However, the flood warning for the Mattawa River downstream of Hurdman Dam has ended, while a watershed conditions statement has been issued for the North Bay-Mattawa watershed.

“Water level on Lake Nipissing at North Bay peaked and is slowly declining,” said Angela Mills, flood duty officer with the authority, in a news release.

“Water levels in Parks Creek will gradually be raised over the next week to match those of the lake in preparation for the operations at the Parks Creek Backflood Control Structure to wind down and stop log removal.”

“Significant flooding across the watershed over the past month has contributed to potential floating and submerged debris,” Mills added.

Boaters should be cautious

“Boaters are advised to be cautious.”

Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area is closed to the public while operations remain ongoing.

Mattawa peaked six cm above the major flood threshold of 154.8 metres. Daily average water level has receded by 68 cm.

“Water levels are forecast to continue to decline, per the Ottawa River Regulating Committee,” the release said.

“Minor flooding may remain in the most low-lying and flood-prone areas. Mattawa Island Conservation Area remains closed due to flooding.”

Residents are asked to keep children and pets away from shorelines and watercourses, and to avoid driving through flooded areas wherever possible.
