Greater Sudbury Utilities is alerting local residents about a potential scam targeting people in the area. The utility provider said it has received reports of a scam in which individuals are contacting residents by phone. “Customers are being contacted by individuals claiming to be from the Government of Canada and told they are entitled to a government credit or rebate,” Greater Sudbury Utilities said in a recent social media post. According to the utility, in some cases, callers are asking questions about utility providers and arranging in-home appointments to review utility bills. Caution urged Greater Sudbury Utilities is advising people to be vigilant if they receive unsolicited calls. “Please be cautious if you receive an unsolicited call offering government credits, rebates, or energy-related programs,” the utility said. The organization said residents who are unsure whether a call is legitimate should not provide personal information and should contact the organization directly using a verified phone number. How to report suspected fraud Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of fraud or an attempted scam is asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca. Greater Sudbury Utilities also encouraged members of the public to help protect friends, family members, neighbours and other vulnerable individuals by sharing the information and urging them to be cautious of unsolicited calls and door-to-door visits.
