Fatal fire in northwestern Ont. First Nation

One person is dead following a devastating fire at a residence in Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation, located in northwestern Ontario near the Manitoba border.

Emergency responders were called, including firefighters and the Ontario Provincial Police, around 3:30 a.m. March 23 to deal with the fire on Crossroads Street in the community.

“Emergency personnel arrived to find a fully engulfed house fire and worked to ensure public safety and prevent the spread of the fire,” the OPP said in a news release March 26.

“Following initial response efforts, one individual was located deceased.”

The investigation is being led by the Office of the Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario, working with the KI OPP, the Sioux Lookout Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services.
