Blue Jays super fan from North Bay ecstatic to attend World Series finale

A superfan of the Blue Jays is on Cloud 9 as he heads to Toronto this weekend, where he hopes to witness his favourite team win the World Series.

The Toronto Blue Jays are just one win away from their first World Series title since 1993 -- and at least one fan from northern Ontario is hoping to witness history unfold before his eyes.

Blue Jays super fan Jazz Mathon, from North Bay, Ont., will be in attendance for Game 6 -- and 7, if it’s necessary.

“I’ve been to quite a few games. But none as big as these,” Mathon told CTV News.

The season ticket holder is a teacher at École Secondaire Publique Odyssée and was at the Rogers Centre for Games 1 and 2 in Toronto.

He said he just has to be there for a chance to watch the crowning moment for Toronto.

“Now the fact that they were able to win two games against the Dodgers in L.A., I’m just over the moon,” Mathon said.

Joking about not looking forward to the drive to Toronto again as that’s been happening for “five consecutive weeks,” he said the realization hasn’t quite sunk in yet that he will be there to see the World Series winner.

“It’s historic,” he said.

“I’ve put in a lot of kilometres and stayed a lot of nights in a hotel over the last couple of decades. It’s just nice now to reach this moment.”

Throughout the post-season run, Mathon has been wearing different Jays jerseys and T-shirts at school, drumming up support for the team. He is often seen in the school hallways high-fiving student fans, as well.

“I’m starting to run out of jerseys and T-shirts to wear,” Mathon said.

Some new fans

“I have colleagues of mine (who) have just started watching baseball over the last couple of weeks. So seeing new Jays fans and seeing the excitement is incredible. It’s something that the country needs right now.”

Mathon remembers the back-to-back Blue Jays World Series wins in 1992 and 1993 when he was a teenager.

This isn’t the first World Series that Mathon has witnessed -- in 2015, he attended Game 5 when the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets 7-2 to win the World Series.

He bought tickets before the final round started, hoping Toronto would be competing. While he said the game was incredible, in his mind, there’s nothing bigger than this moment.

“We have two games to wrap this up and I am feeling confident,” Mathon said, adding he’s been blown away by how the entire country has rallied around the team.

“The whole unity factor has been amazing.”

The Jays have a chance to win their first World Series title in 32 years beginning tonight at 8. Game 7, if needed, is Saturday.
