Several homes evacuated due to brush fire in Longueuil

Firefighters are evacuating several homes on Montreal’s South Shore as they respond to a major fire in a wooded area.

Firefighters evacuated several homes on Montreal’s South Shore as they respond to a major fire in a wooded area Thursday afternoon.

The Longueuil fire department said the fire started shortly after 4 p.m. in the woods near Joseph-Daigneault Street in Longueuil, near the Promenades St-Bruno shopping centre.

Three homes on Mufliers Street were damaged by the fire, according to Daniel Deslauriers, section chief for the Service de sécurité incendie de l’agglomération de Longueuil.

Several other homes were threatened by the fire and were evacuated. By 7 p.m., the fire department said the fire was not out but considered under control.

Firefighters said they were going to allow people back to their homes Thursday night after they were evacuated.

Deslauriers said no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Longueuil police were are also on scene to assist the fire department.

Hydro-Quebec reported more than 9,000 households were without power in the area, citing an “emergency service interruption.”
