Past and present Regina broadcasters were recognized Saturday as CKRM Radio celebrated its 100th anniversary with a gala at the Conexus Arts Centre. The event honoured several influential voices who helped shape broadcasting in Saskatchewan over the past century. Among those recognized was Lorne Harasen, who pioneered talk radio in Saskatchewan during the 1960’s. Tribute was also paid to the late James Allyn, a longtime news anchor at both CKRM and CTV Regina. Willy Cole and the late Fred King were honoured for hosting the long-running Flea Market radio show, which became a staple for Saskatchewan listeners over the years. “It’s truly an honour to be recognized in any time. But it was a revival, it was a chance to see many of the listeners that have been with us for many years,” Cole said. “But a 100th anniversary in this industry at this time, and what’s happening in the country, is quite an accomplishment.” CKRM was founded in 1926 by James Richardson and Sons to broadcast grain prices to farmers. Over the past century the station has grown into one of Saskatchewan’s longest-serving radio broadcasters, covering news, sports and community events across the province.
