Special weather statement in effect for London region

Environment Canada says periods of heavy rain are expected across parts of southwestern Ontario today, with localized rainfall totals of 30 to 50 millimetres possible.

The weather agency said the heaviest precipitation is expected from now through early this evening as showers and isolated thunderstorms move along a passing cold front.

Forecasters noted that the slow-moving system could produce bursts of intense rainfall in some areas, increasing the risk of water pooling on roadways and in low-lying locations.

Motorists are being advised to exercise caution and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Residents are also encouraged to avoid low-lying areas that may be prone to temporary flooding.

Environment Canada said conditions are expected to improve later this evening as the system moves out of the region.
