Snowfall warning in effect, frigid temperatures overnight and into morning

A snowfall warning is in effect as a polar vortex encompasses most of the province, bringing with it the coldest air of the season.

We could see wind chill values colder than minus 30.

The extreme cold can put you at risk and cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. There is also the risk of frostbite.

CTV London weather specialist Reta Ismail says a weather system is moving into the region Sunday morning.

“Widespread snowfall throughout the morning into the afternoon for your Sunday,” said Ismail. Anywhere between 10 to 15 cm of snowfall expected by Monday morning.”

She added the winds will shift, causing lake effect flurries will be developing.

“With the passing of this weather system, [the winds] start to gust out of the northeast 30 to 50km/h around noon [Sunday],” explained Ismail. “Monday through to Thursday, we’re dealing with the strong polar vortex that’s lingering for the next seven days, so make sure to bundle up and stay warm.”

Sunday: Snow. Local blowing snow in the afternoon. Amount 5 to 10 cm. Wind northeast 30 km/h gusting to 50. High minus 9. Wind chill minus 25 in the morning and minus 18 in the afternoon.

Monday: A mix of sun and cloud with 60 percent chance of flurries. High minus 9.

Tuesday: Cloudy with 60 per cent chance of flurries. Local blowing snow. Windy. High minus 9.
