Waterloo Regional Police say 10 bank and courier scams reported in the last month

Waterloo Regional Police are urging residents to stay vigilant after receiving 10 reports of bank and courier scams since April 20, with a combined financial loss of more than $100,000.

The victims all received a call from someone posing as a fraud and/or security investigator who claimed there was “suspicious” flagged in their bank account.

As part of the so-called “investigation,” victims were asked for their personal banking details and told not to use their cards.

The scammers would then arrange for a “courier” to collect the victim’s debit and credit cards from their home.

Those cards were later used to make fraudulent purchases or withdrawals.

“Residents are reminded that banks and police will never send a courier to collect bank or credit cards and will never request PINs, passwords or full account details,” Waterloo Regional Police said in a media release.

They also noted there could be more victims who have yet to come forward.

Key warning signs include requests for secrecy or pressure to act quickly, instructions not to speak with family members or bank staff, and requests to hand over bank cards or share PIN information.
