Skyway bridge in Burlington to remain closed until at least Monday

CTV Toronto: Truck removed from Burlington Skyway Emergency crews have removed a dump truck that was wedged under scaffolding following a collision on the Burlington Skyway on Thursday.

BURLINGTON, Ont. - Police say part of the Burlington Skyway will remain closed until at least Monday, as workers must clear debris from the bridge before determining the extent of the damage caused by a crash which took place on Thursday.

A dump truck slammed into scaffolding on the bridge Thursday, bringing afternoon rush-hour traffic to a standstill and shutting down the north-bound lanes.

Police say the bridge structure sustained "significant damage" and that the Toronto-bound lanes of the Queen Elizabeth Way remain closed between Eastport Drive and North Shore Boulevard. The Skyway's south-bound lanes remain open.

Toronto-bound drivers from the Hamilton-Niagara region are being asked to plan alternative routes through the long weekend

Police say by Monday the Skyway should be clear enough for engineers to complete final testing and determine whether its Toronto-bound lanes are safe to use.

Police say the truck driver is charged with impaired driving and exceeding 80 milligrams of blood alcohol content in a motor vehicle.
