The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating the city’s first homicide of the year after a weekend stabbing at a multi-unit residential building in the 600 block of MacDonald Avenue on Saturday evening. The police service said officers were dispatched to the scene around 11:30 p.m. on May 16 following a report of a stabbing. “911 communicators received a report of a person having been stabbed inside a residence at a multi-unit residential building,” said police in a news release Monday. The police service said the victim was transported to hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. The incident resulted in a significant police presence in the area on Sunday. Arrest made Officers arrested a 29-year-old woman at the scene and charged her with second-degree murder. Police said the victim and the accused were known to one another. Canvass underway Detectives with Investigation Services, including members of the forensic identification unit, have been assigned and will be canvassing the area for information. Police have widened the timeframe for potential evidence since the new release on Monday. “They are asking anyone that may have information or video in the area of where that incident took place in the 600 block of McDonald Avenue, from 9 p.m. up until 12:30 in the morning on Sunday,” said Sault police spokesperson Lincoln Louttitt, speaking with CTV News on Tuesday. The original request from police had asked for video between 11 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Anyone with information or with video footage of the area in the specified timeframe is urged to contact Det. Sgt. Sean O’Dell by calling (705) 949-6300 ext. 288. Tips can be provided anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers. Police have not released the identity of the victim. The accused remains in custody after appearing in bail court on Tuesday, where her matter was adjourned until May 28 when she will appear by video remand. “Further information may be released as it becomes available,” police said.
