Two people were given fines for public mischief after the Montreal Canadiens’ nail-biting 3-2 OT Game 7 victory against the Buffalo Sabres Monday night. Montreal police (SPVM) deployed its riot police to intervene near the Bell Centre following the game, where thousands of fans were celebrating the on-the-road win. Florence Stafford, a spokesperson with Montreal police, says that at 11:40 p.m., a small group started throwing trash cans and bottles towards officers on duty in the vicinity of Peel Street near Sainte-Catherine Street. The force countered with tear gas to disperse the group. A little while later, at 12:15 a.m., police say fireworks and other pyrotechnics were being ignited in the direction of the cavalry. That crowd was also reprimanded. No arrests were made, and Stafford notes that the majority of fans left the Bell Centre and its surrounding celebrations calmly.
