Dozens of dogs dumped along rural southwestern Ont. road

Another dog has been found abandoned in Oxford County.

A Good Samaritan noticed several pups running loose in a rural area between Innerkip and Bright, along the side of Concession 8, on Saturday.

Fourteen dogs had been caught as of Monday. According to Ground Search and Rescue KW, they were infested with ticks, had matted fur and were in poor condition. All were believed to be a Shih Tzu mix and under the age of four.

“Some of them, their eyes were matted closed,” Katt Burtenshaw, co-founder and president of the organization, told CTV News on Nov. 3. “Very hard for them to walk. Their legs are matted to their stomachs. A lot of them have cherry eye. Some of them appear to have hernias. They definitely haven’t been well cared for.”

Rescuers continued to look for other abandoned dogs in the area.

“Our team has been going out with our heat-sensing scope,” Burtenshaw explained. “We’re able to see them moving through things at night. During the day and at night, they blend in really, really well with the leaves because of their coloring and how matted they are.”

Ground Search and Rescue KW said another dog has been found since Monday and it is currently receiving medical care in the community. They believe all of the animals came from a puppy mill.

Ontario’s Animal Welfare Service has also launched an investigation.
