Ice Bucket Challenge: See the spike in ALS donations

The 'Ice Bucket Challenge' has inspired an unprecedented spike in donations to the U.S.-based ALS Association.

As videos of business moguls, celebrities and politicians dumping ice-cold water on their heads continue to light up social media, the organization said it's never been in a "better position" to fight the fatal disease.

"We will be able to strategize about efforts in ways that previously would not have been possible," ASL Association President Barbara Newhouse said in a statement on Saturday.

As of Sunday, the organization said it has received $13.3 million in donations since July 29, compared to $1.7 million during the same period last year.

ALS Canada is also encouraging Canadians to donate to the cause. As of Monday afternoon, the agency has collected nearly $133,000 toward its $1 million goal.
