‘Spans the generations’: Edmonton Lego convention sizes up in venue for avid fans

The lineup is stacked this weekend for Edmonton’s third annual Lego fan convention.

Northern Bricks is a premier event at the Alberta Aviation Museum – a larger space compared to last year because of what organizer Sam Malmberg credits to the growing population of Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL).

“You’re talking about a toy brand that has been around for more than 90 years now, and it’s grown with people. It’s coming into its own as its own art medium,” he said.

Hundreds of intricately designed Lego creations, alongside their dedicated ‘brick artists,’ will be on display both Saturday and Sunday. There are also vendors with unique sets for kids, beginners and hardcore enthusiasts.

For AFOLs Ken and Scott Harrison, the joy of Lego is in the meditative process of piecing together a complex set.

“It distracts you. It takes your brain away. It’s easy to build a lot of different stuff now than there were 20 years ago,” Scott Harrison said on Saturday.

His dad Ken, retired, says the sets keep him busy.

“It just amazes me how they design it,” he said.

Angelique Roth, the Northern Bricks chair, spent 16 hours transporting her Hogwarts-themed Lego set to the convention. It took her and her girlfriend hundreds of hours, though, to dream, sketch, collect and build each part of the design.

“It’s definitely meant to span the generations … as an adult, you can build with your kids, you can build with your seniors,” she said.

Northern Bricks was created by the Northern Alberta Lego Users Group. Times and admission prices can be found on the event website.
