Edmonton weather: Hot with a late-day storm risk

According to CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel's forecast, Monday could see thunderstorms.

The heat continues to ramp up today.

Edmonton hit highs of 23 C on Saturday and 27 C on Sunday. We’ll get close to 30 C this afternoon and Wednesday-Friday should all be near 30 C as well.

Heat warnings are in effect for northeastern Alberta (Fort McMurray and north). We could see that heat warning expanded to include other parts of northern and north-central Alberta mid-week.

But, it’ll probably get dropped for tomorrow.

Temperatures will still be above average Tuesday, but the daytime high will “pull back” to around 25 C.

A cold front slashes across the province from west to east this afternoon and we’ll get some widespread showers and thunderstorms with the potential for some severe storms late this afternoon/early this evening.

The main threats are potentially damaging wind gusts (80-100 km/h) and large hail (possibly nickel-sized).

Most areas will not see severe storms, but if you’re in central and/or northern Alberta, pay attention to any weather alerts that get issued later today.

Outside of the late-day shower/thunderstorm risk today, it looks fairly sunny for Tuesday/Wednesday and most of Thursday. THEN ... another chance of an evening shower or thunderstorm on Thursday.

Temperatures will cool for the coming weekend and next week. We’re looking at highs in the low to mid 20s Saturday/Sunday and then highs around 20 C for most of next week.

So, if this week’s heat is a little too much for you...you’re getting some relief this coming weekend and next week.

If you love the heat, soak it in this week. We’ll be a lot closer to record highs than the seasonal average.
