Couch set on fire with propane torch, Alberta motel evacuated: RCMP

A man is facing charges after Mounties say he set a fire in his motel room.

Emergency crews were called to a fire at the Big Horn Motel on Gregg Avenue in Hinton at 4:33 a.m. on Wednesday.

All of the people inside the motel were able to get out and firefighters put out the fire.

According to an RCMP release, the investigation determined that a guest had set the couch in his room on fire using a propane torch.

A 56-year-old man is now charged with arson by negligence and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was released from custody with a court date of Dec. 3 in Hinton.

A total of 38 firefighters were involved in fighting the fire, many of whom were volunteers.

The fire was declared out at 2:30 p.m., ten hours after crews were called to the scene.

The Town of Hinton says the motel suffered significant structural compromise.

Several agencies including the Red Cross and local residents came together to offer supplies, support, and assistance to displaced guests.

No other buildings were damaged.
