Citywide parking ban to begin Sunday morning

The City of Edmonton has declared another Phase 1 parking ban which will begin on Sunday at 7 a.m.

A Saturday morning media release said the parking ban is being activated to clear the accumulation and drifting of snow the city has seen over the last few days.

“To facilitate the clearing by our plows and graders, it is imperative these routes remain unobstructed by parked vehicles,” said parks and roads services supervisor Val Dacyk.

A yellow-level blowing snow and travel advisory instituted by Environment Canada on Friday evening was lifted on Saturday morning.

During a Phase 1 parking ban, cars aren’t allowed to park on arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes or roads within business improvement areas at all hours until clearing is complete. Parking is also not allowed on any roadways marked with white “Seasonal No Parking” signs.

EPark zones are also not active during the parking ban while being cleared, the release added.

Parking in prohibited areas during the ban can result in a ticket of $250 or being towed.

Residents are still able to park on residential streets and parking is allowed on roads once snow removal is over, so long as parking is allowed there normally. A snow clearing map is available on the city website.

The city says it expects the ban to last three to five days. A separate announcement will be made when it ends or if officials decide to move into a Phase 2 parking ban. People with winter road concerns can call 311.

The city release also asks property owners and residents to continue clearing their sidewalks on and adjacent to their properties after every snowfall.

Free sand is available at community sandboxes around the city. The fine for not clearing your property’s sidewalk is $100 plus any extra cleanup costs from the city.
