Regina city council approved an estimated $8.2 million to replace the video score boards and turf at Mosaic Stadium in preparation for hosting the 2027 Grey Cup. At Wednesday’s meeting, city council passed a motion to pull $8.2 million from its Regina Revitalization Initiative Stadium Reserve for the procurement, installation, commissioning, and other related project costs, for replacing all of the LED video display boards at the stadium. The funds will also be used to swap out the artificial turf on the field. Council discussed what the new turf field lines should look like to accommodate the Canadian Football League (CFL) recent changes to field dimensions for Saskatchewan Roughriders games. However, concerns about how the changes will impact other groups who use the stadium were brought forward, specifically the Regina Rams, Regina Riot, Regina Thunder, soccer groups and others. “The replacements were needed due to the equipment reaching end of life, administration pointed out. “We knew that this was a life cycle of the turf and the jumbotron. From that perspective, this was planned regardless of the CFL rules,” Mayor Chad Bachynski said. Council passed the motion 9 to 1, with Ward 5 Coun. Sarah Turnbull voting against, citing a lack of consultation. However, Bachynski said engagement with community groups will take place before field lines are decided. “We know the turf that we need to get. The consultation is really around how they adjust the lines,” Mayor Chad Bachynski told reporters Wednesday evening. “That’s a stitched or painted lines or combination of, so we can get on [ordering] the turf right away.” A stakeholder engagement plan is underway to have the field lines in place for all community groups who use the facility, he added. City renews Currie Field lease for Red Sox At Wednesday’s meeting, council unanimously approved renewing the city’s lease for 25 and a half more years with the Regina Red Sox Baseball Club GP Inc. for Currie Field to host its baseball games. A portion of 3898 East Victoria Avenue, reserved for billboard lands, was also included in the agreement. The renewal of the lease also allows the Regina Red Sox to hold more than six special events per year following an amendment to the city’s Currie Field Alcohol Bylaw.
