Boyle Street announces new logo to accompany new facility

Boyle Street Community Services has unveiled the logo for its new headquarters ahead of its opening next month.

King Thunderbird Centre, or “okimaw peyesew kamik” in Cree, at 10010 107A Ave. will begin to open Nov. 12 and host a grand opening on Dec. 16.

The facility’s new logo, which consists of a multi-coloured thunderbird and two lightning bolts over a medicine wheel, was designed by artist and longtime community member Virgil Grandbois and is meant to represent the spirit, creativity and strength of Boyle Street Community Services’s clients.

“Throughout this process we have sought direction from Indigenous elders and leaders. The creation of this logo, through a process rooted in ceremony, is further evidence of what can be achieved in our community when we are guided by Indigenous wisdom and act in the spirit of reconciliation,” said executive director Jordan Reiniger in a press release on Wednesday.

okimaw peyesew kamik is a net-zero building that consists of an outdoor sweat lodge, fire pits, a ceremony space, kitchens and showers.

Construction began in 2023.

Boyle Street serves around 7,000 people each year.
