Licence suspended for highest-billing doctor in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN’S — Newfoundland and Labrador’s College of Physicians and Surgeons has suspended the licence of the province’s top-billing doctor.

The college’s website says Dr. Harry Dang’s licence was suspended on Dec. 5, though it does not say why.

A notice on the province’s medical association website says Dang was an award-winning ophthalmologist who practised at the Jackman Eye Institute in St. John’s, N.L.

Matthew Head, chief executive officer of the institute, said in an email that Dang has not practised there since Dec. 4.

Head says the College of Physicians and surgeons is conducting a review, and the clinic remains focused on safe, high-quality care in the meantime.

A physician compensation list posted by the province shows Dang claimed more than $4.9 million in fees for services in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which was the highest amount in the province.
