Street racing suspects charged ahead of targeted enforcement in Lethbridge: police

Lethbridge police say an officer on a motorcycle pulled over two racing vehicles this past Friday evening.

Police say one vehicle, a truck, was stunting at 6 Avenue and Mayor Magrath Drive South and then sped off, reaching roughly 125 km/h.

The officer went after the truck, police say, and was passed by a second speeding vehicle, this one a sedan.

According to police, both vehicles “continued to accelerate, overtaking multiple motorists.”

Both were eventually pulled over, police say.

The drivers of both vehicles are under 18 years of age, police say.

The truck’s driver was charged with dangerous driving and ticketed for careless driving and speeding, as well as stunting and failing to maintain equipment in good working order.

The sedan’s driver was charged with dangerous driving and ticketed for careless driving and speeding.

They’re both scheduled to appear in court July 8.

In a release issued Tuesday, Lethbridge police also noted a “targeted enforcement initiative” that took place Saturday evening.

Local police and Alberta Sheriffs were at a number of locations, looking for “speeding, excessive vehicle noise, stunting, racing, and other illegal driving behaviours.”

One hundred and sixteen tickets were issued as a result.
