SAIT teams up with Imperial to launch new Energy Innovation Centre in southeast Calgary

A new innovation centre launched by SAIT and Imperial in southeast Calgary does research on making oil and gas extraction more sustainable.

SAIT is using a huge corporate gift to open a new research lab.

The Imperial Energy Innovation Centre is now open and doing research on making oil and gas extractions more sustainable.

In May, Imperial Oil gave $37 million to SAIT for the centre, the largest corporate gift to any post-secondary institution in Alberta.

Imperial also gave an additional $300,000 for a new student project fund.

SAIT and Imperial Oil will work together to decide which projects move together.

“It empowers the students to take on some of the industry’s really challenging, relevant, industry projects that are meaningful,” said Imperial Upstream’s Cheryl Gomez Smith, “and it’s really through teamwork and innovation that the teams are going to learn firsthand about the opportunities we’re talking about.”

The new lab is part of SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services Hub.
