2 men plead guilty to some charges for brutal Calgary bus driver attack

Two men charged in a brutal attack on a Calgary bus driver have pleaded guilty to some of the charges they faced.

In May 2025, the driver was stabbed and beaten with a pipe after stopping along his route in the northeast.

Police said two passengers wanted him to divert away from the route and then became violent.

The driver was left in life-threatening condition.

On Monday in court, 20-year-old Curtis Baker Spence pleaded guilty to robbery and breaching a court order.

The Crown said a charge of aggravated assault is expected to be withdrawn after sentencing.

On Tuesday, 22-year-old Darryl Flett pleaded guilty to breaching a court order.

The transit union wants a deterrence message sent.

“People need to know that it’s not OK. It’s chasing people out of the industry. His entire head was stitched up. He had slashes that just missed major arteries,” said Mike Mahar, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 583 president.

“He’s still going. He’s in physiotherapy twice a week.”

Sentencing for both Spence and Flett is set for May.
