Man charged in connection with death of inmate at Drumheller Institution

A man has been charged in connection with a homicide of a Drumheller Institution inmate.

On Nov. 4 at 4:23 p.m., Drumheller RCMP responded to a report of an assault inside the institution, where they were told one prisoner went into the cell of a second prisoner and got in an altercation.

The victim was discovered unconscious by staff and transported to hospital in Calgary with serious, life-threatening injuries.

On Dec. 13, the victim, Hue Nguyen, 55, died. On Dec. 16, following an autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be homicide.

On Dec. 17, Christopher Despins, 40, was arrested at the Edmonton Institution and charged with manslaughter.

He’s scheduled to appear in court in Drumheller on Jan. 9.
