Lethbridge Hurricanes eyeing third straight win; optimistic about rest of season

Heading into Friday night's game against the Calgary Hitmen, the Lethbridge Hurricanes were looking to build upon their current two-game win streak.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are looking to build off a two-game win streak as they host the Calgary Hitmen Friday night.

The Hurricanes enter the game after earning a 5-2 victory on Wednesday over the Saskatoon Blades.

“The energy in the locker room is really good,” said forward Owen Berge.

“The guys are really bonding together, and as a team we’re feeling really good going into this game.”

The Hurricanes have not been able to record a three-game win streak this season. The last two-game win streak the team held was on Nov. 14, 2025, where they beat the Kelowna Rockets 5-4 in overtime.

“I’ve been really happy with our older guys, and our younger guys are competing every day, and our practices have been really good, so really happy with our group,” said Hurricanes assistant coach Ryan Aasman.

The Canes hold a 14-33-0-1 record this season and sit in 10^th place in the Eastern Conference.

Heading into Friday’s game, the club’s leadership team says there’s one simple message being shared.

“It’s what you play 68 games for, right? It’s the chance to be in the playoffs and a chance to host the cup at the end of the year,” said Berge, who serves as an alternate captain.

“So, I think the biggest thing is engraining that into our younger guys and making sure that message is still there, that playoffs are in reach and if we play the right way in these next 20 games or so there’s a possibility, we can make it.”

It’s been a challenging season for the club with several big trades, players leaving to the NCAA after eligibility rules changes and the resignation of former general manager Peter Anholt in January.

Despite the turbulent times, players say it hasn’t deterred them.

“You just have to keep to yourself a little bit and worry about what you can control,” said forward Kade Duell.

“When new guys come in, you create a bond with them, and when guys leave, just leave on a good note and try and build it for those guys.”

The Canes have 20 regular season games left to play. Berge says every game matters going forward.

“Every day we come to the rink looking to get better and we’re going to compete,” explained Berge.

“We’re not a team that is going to sit back and take it how it is, we’re going to try and get better.”

That player mentality that has coaching staff optimistic about the future ahead for the young team.

“I think just living in the moment has been a big thing,” said Aasman.

“Can we get better today and worry about what’s in front of us and see where it takes us the rest of the way, and hopefully, we find our way into a playoff spot.”
